Start Date: 11 Ches 1493
The party has been waiting in Oakhurst for several months. It has taken time for Garon (proprietor of The Ol’ Boar Inn) to “fence” some of the items the group found in the citadel. However that is done, spring has arrived in this area, and the party has been itching to get back into action. The time away has allowed the party to learn some new skills and hone some old ones.
A stranger comes into town looking for Mirun Jalaxs. This stranger, a high elf named Eleindar Olaren, has a message for Mirun. It appears that Mirun’s “bosses” at Waterdeep need him to return immediately, and provided Eleindar to “help” Mirun on his “projects”. Mirun asks Eleindar to assist the party members, and he will return as soon as he can. At the same time, Kerowyn Hucrele comes looking for the party to help with an issue that just came to her. It occurred to her that the fruit from the Gulthias Tree would spread twig blights, and her cousin, Lady Velrosa Nandar, in Nightstone, bought a fruit from the tree while visiting Kerowyn. She is worried about her cousin, who recently lost her husband and has pressures enough. Nightstone has had troubles with wood elves for many years, and is afraid if the twig blights take root in the nearby forest, the elves will attack the village in error. Because Galadhon is an elf and the party has seen the real evil behind the twig blights, the party is uniquely qualified to intercede in Nightstone. She can offer only 100 gp for their assistance, and believes her cousin would offer a reward as well for this information.
Zarn accompanies Mirun to Waterdeep (to ensure he gets there safely) while the rest of the party purchases a donkey and heads towards Nightstone, which is 10 days away. The group consists of:
Aaron – Kirk
Galadhon – Paul
Houblon – Matt
Eleindar – Cameron
Erky Timbers – NPC Cleric
The trip is uneventful, as most of the travel is on the High Road between Waterdeep and Daggerford, and it is well traveled. Nightstone is about ten miles off the High road bordering the Ardeep Forest.
After following the trail for ten miles, the party hears the ringing of a bell. The sound grows louder as Nightstone comes into view. A river flows around the settlement, forming a moat. The village itself is contained within a wooden palisade, beyond which you see a windmill, a tall steeple, and the high-pitched rooftops of several other buildings. Apart from the ringing of the bell, there appears to be no other activity in the village. The trail ends before a lowered drawbridge that spans the moat. Beyond the drawbridge, two stone watchtowers flank an open gap in the palisade.
The party is concerned something is not right in the village:
The drawbridge is lowered and no guards can be seen.
The temple bell won’t stop ringing.
The keep and the bridge that connects it to the village have partially collapsed.
Moving over the open drawbridge and into the town, the party encounters 3 worgs feasting on the body of a dead dog. One of the worgs immediately sniffs the arrival of the party and attacks. A short bloody fight ensues. Houblon gets bit bad and thrown down, but the party kills the worgs and heals Houblon.
As through the square some of the buildings the group finds large boulders embedded in the ground. With no sign of the villagers, the group investigates the ringing of the temple bell. This wooden temple is dedicated to Lathander (god of the dawn) and Mielikki (goddess of forests). It has a slender steeple containing a large bronze bell, and stained glass windows depicting images of birth, the dawning sun, trees, and unicorns. This high-vaulted chamber has four stained-glass windows set into the north and south walls. Beneath the windows are plain wooden benches but they have been thrown about the room. The room is mostly empty otherwise. Standing against the back wall is a wooden pulpit with steps leading up to it. The floor of the temple is composed of dirt.
Investigating further, they open the back room door to see two goblins gleefully ringing the bell. They defeat the goblins quickly and discover the creatures have been ransacking the temple.
Moving into the square, the groups finds it a muddy open area with a 5-foot-deep hole in the middle of it. The nightstone once stood here, but the cloud giants took the megalith and left the hole behind. North of the hole is a covered well, and boulders litter the area. Looking around, the party finds some goblins in other parts of the town. The first group of goblins attack but are quickly killed by the party. The group decides to defend the square and prepare for the next way of goblins.
