Sometimes good intentions (and warnings) don’t work out.
So, Zephyros gets us to Goldenfields. The arrival is not lost on the members of its community. After talking with some guards and a few other folks, we are cleared as friendly. We are also told that if we have issues to bring up about security, we should see the Abbot (Elarden Darvick)
The community is incredible and seems to be a gardener’s or farmer’s dream. We also meet a few of the locals.
A guard at the gate is named Rindgrin. He “warned” us about Hantanus Tarm, the gatehouse castellan. Miros Xelbrin is the innkeeper at the NorthFurrow’s End, the town’s Inn. Near the gate is a small shop called “Earth Mother’s Bounty.” where visitors can buy seeds and cornucopias here. The store is run by Sevembra Tumbleleaf, a strongheart halfling druid. She sells nothing but the finest seeds and gives away lots of free samples. And Lifferlas the treant, seems to specialize in watching over the kids of Goldenfields. These people are some of the nicest folks I’ve ever met.
We ask some of the locals about what might be the cause or reason that the area is so bountiful. None of them know of any artifact or reason. Or maybe they know and are reluctant to share any information like that with strangers that have just arrived in the area.
We make our way to visit the Abbot. We also encounter the abbey’s black bears Darlow and Tilbee. They seem nice, but I’ve never seen anything like that before. The group meets the abbot, Ellardrin Darovik and share the story of the attack on Nightstone. The news of the shattering of the ordaining and the concerns that the village might soon be attacked based on Zephyro’s discussions with his friends. As with everyone else, he seems to believe the village and area is well guarded and able to defend itself against any attacks.
The group is doubtful of that. There is a wall, guards and towers, but the towers are too far apart and a wall would be of little help against flying castles or giants. Still it’s not our home we can only share our knowledge and hope that precautions are added.
After we finish with the abbot we head to the inn to talk with Miros. We share the tragic news of his parents passing and pass on the winged cat that belonged to them. He is understandably sad, but he seems to recover quickly. Miros would prefer to celebrate their lives and thanks us for traveling so far to share the news. Miros is a bear of a man with white hair seeming to come from everywhere. He also asks that we spend the night as his guests.
While there, we meet Naxene Drathkala. She is a representative of Waterdeeps’ order of mages and protectors. She is a striking-looking woman who appears to enjoy her book. Waterdeep gets a lot of its produce from the Goldenfields’ bounty. She lives above the stables as a permanent resident.
During our visit, we also learned that the treant was awakened by a druid named Aerglas. He left on a pilgrimage to Shadowtop Cathedral. He followed the Dessin river 30 years ago.
That night around 2am the Inn is attacked. Its a band of 20 goblins, 5 bugbears, and 2 ogres.
I spend a few bardic inspirations, some of my healing lights, 2 charges from the wand of entangle (the second catches 3 goblins) and try to use Farie Fire on 2 Bugbears. Neither is effective. I consider it a successful encounter, as I was never hit. I did get a few kills with some of my cantrips. The rest of the party is more successful. All but a few of the goblins are taken out. Galadhon “hunter marks” one of them so that he can track the retreating goblin.
None of the loot appears to be magical (per my detect magic spell). What the hell is going on now?
