Today I learned that just because you’re in charge, doesn’t mean you are honorable. And when you’re looking for evil, make sure to look around closely.
After we finished the fight at the villager longhouse, we and several of the locals headed for the Abbey. There was a ringing of the bells warning of attacks coming from the Abbey and we wanted to investigate. We left Lifferlas to defend the longhouses and handed the dead goblins’ scimitars to the inhabitants of the houses. I also recommended that the folks band together in a single house to cover each other’s backs.
Heading for the abbey with Zi Liang, Oren Yogilvy, and Naxene Drathkala, we encounter the halfling druid, Sevembra Tumbleleaf. She warns us about 2 hill giants she discovered nearby. Knowing we couldn’t leave them able to cause mischief, we prepare ourselves for attack. Zarn heads off to lure them in, while we ready our ranged attacks.
Once the battle starts, the giants knock out Houblon and Zarn, already weakened by wounds from the previous battled. Erky heals Zarn while I stabilize Houblon with Spare the Dying spell. When Eleindar and Galadhon finally knock out one of the giants, the remaining giant surrenders, falls to the ground and starts sobbing like a baby. As no one in the group can speak Giant, we communicate by speaking in Goblin (and the giant’s goblin is not very good). He says that his name is Lob and his companion is Ogg. Based on the conversation they come from a village of 6 Hill Giants. Lob says they are here to get food for someone named Guh. Lob says “Guh want food”, “Me get food for Guh” and “Grudd Haug. Home.”
Sevembra brings 10 guards to watch over the surrendered giants, and we head over to the abbey, as the morning rays of the sun bring the dawn. As we head for the abbey more guardsmen are moving to the south. Arriving at the abbey we find the abbot is not there. Exhausted by the night’s fighting, we take a short 1-hour rest. Refreshed, we follow the flow of guards to the walls on the south and find the Abbot. Massed outside Goldenfield’s walls is a small army of giants, ogres, bugbears and goblins Galadhon and Eleindar fire their bows at the enemy and score a few symbolic blows. The giants return fire by launched helmeted goblins at the walls in a kamakaze attack, but the enemy forces don’t seem interested in a massed attack on city walls.
We check in with the abbot and ask for a place to recuperate. He points us to some nearby barracks within the wall tower. When we awaken 8 hours later, the attacking forces have dispersed and disappeared. Unwilling to attack they appear to have just retreated. As we did most of the fighting inside the walls, we now seem to be local heroes.
We rest for a couple of days and then decide to go to check on our friend Zephyros the cloud giant mage in his flying tower. We discuss the situation and agree to return tomorrow with a list of questions we can ask for his divination spells. Returning to Goldenfields we have a chat with Zi Liang. She has a beautiful pendant necklace she wants us to deliver to a person named Cauldar Marskyl in Waterdeep. Eleindar appraises and believes it to be valuable, perhaps 600-800 gp in value. Cauldar is the head butler of House Thann in Waterdeep. House Thann are well known in Waterdeep as vintners and collectors of fine wines.
Naxene calls us all together as she is convinced the attack is the beginning of something bigger is amiss. As we share a bit of our information on the Ordning being broken and let her know about some information Zephyros has told us. She agrees to go meet with him and suggests that we talk to a sage in Waterdeep about contacting a Dragon, which Naxene believes may be needed to defeat the Giants. Her contact’s name is Chazlauth Yarghorn. We also hear of nothing that is missing from Goldenfields. No artifact stolen like in Nightstone.
When I ask about the 2 Hill Giants that surrendered, we discover the Goldenfields Captain of the Guard, Strog Thunderblade, has been bragging about how he killed 2 Hill Giants during the attack. He killed Lob and Ogg while they were in custody. This bullshit cannot stand.
I write a play called the “Hero of Silver Meadows”. It’s a comedy/tragedy about an ill-planned attack by simple-minded Stone Giants and Ogres on the peaceful town of Silver Meadows. After the townsfolk and some travelers repel the attackers, the half-orc head guardsman (Throb Shortblade) “heroically” backstabs 2 giants while their hands are tied. With the help of my companions (hopefully including Zi and Orren) and some magical cantrips (Minor Illusion, Light, Prestidigitation, Guidance) we perform it near Miros’ tavern. We learn Zi Liang detests Strog as she knows he is a lazy guard captain too in love with brew and food. Goldenfields is in danger as long as he is in charge of security.
I’m troubled that I didn’t watch the 2 giants more closely, and they died because of it. I must remember that evil comes in many shapes. I pray to Oghma for forgiveness of my mistake. Having met the giants for a few minutes, there is no way I would consider them good. There is also no way I would consider them truly evil. I do not think they deserved to be executed. They should have been punished, or at least put on trial first.
