Beginning Date: 24 Mirtul 1493
For several months the Heroes have been exploring north in the Valley of Khedrun and surrounding countryside. The valley was formed by the River Mirar flowing east to west, joined by the River Khedrun from the north. The Spine of the World looms ominously to the north, and Luskwood borders the valley to the south.
The party has inquired with many locals for the whereabouts of Harshnag, the Frost Giant they need to locate the Temple of the All-Father. Inhabitants have spotted him several times in the area, but the Heroes have struggled to contact him. Galadhon tracked him on a few occasions, but Harshnag slipped away by jumping deep ravines the smaller Heroes could not easily traverse.
As the morning of the 13th of Eleint dawns bright and clear, the party headed north, straight up into the high mountains at the Spine of the World. Harshnag’s trek lead in this direction and the Heroes were close behind. Although summer was the season down in the valley, at this elevation is was always winter. Although the snow was deep, the group long ago made peace with it hindering their movement. The snow piled in a labyrinth of ravines and sunken trails.
Erupting from an embankment in a shower of snow, a HUGE creature stood up and screaming a thunderous howl that echoed over the mountains. With snow-white fur camouflaging its body, the group walked right past it. With a howling rage, the beast rushed towards the heroes. Shocked by the creature but not surprised, the party drew weapons to defend themselves.
The creature breathed a bitter cold breath weapon hitting several of the party, causing severe injuries to Houblon, Aaron, and Erky. Erky cast a mass healing to help and the group’s fighting prowess created by months of adventuring focused on the enormous snow-white behemoth. The creature possessed the ability to paralyze victims with its gaze, then moving in to rend the victim with its claws. While it caught Zarn in this attack, the barbarian’s rage defenses lessened the vicious damage to mere mortal levels.
Just as the Heroes began to turn the tide on this great mountain beast and it turned to flee, another one appeared to take up the attack. While the heroes slew the first creature as it ran, the second one paralyzed and crushed Erky, leaving him dying in the snow. Only a “Spare the Dying” spell from Aaron kept Erky from certain death.
The Heroes fought a desperate battle against the crazed beast, finally driving life from its body. As the party bandaged its many wounds, Harshnag came running over the hillcrest, great-axe in hand, bellowing curses in Giant and Common. Surprised that the Heroes killed TWO Abominable Yetis with no loss of life, he kept watch as the group tracked the creatures back to their lair.
Finding a hollowed-out snowbank that acted as the Yetis’ camp, they found the chewed and dismembered remains of other hapless travelers ambushed by the creatures. Among the offal and frozen flesh on the cave floor, the party gathered up 680 gp, 112 pp, 570 sp, and 2680 copper. Also recovered were three ornate rings (some still attached to fingers) and a sapphire gem. With a Detect Magic spell, Aaron discovers a Staff of Healing.
Talking to Harshnag over a fire, the group explains their experiences in the last three months. They also relay the guidance to find him so that he could lead them to the Temple of the All-Father. Believing this a good plan, Harshnag agreed to lead them to the giants’ sacred temple.
Temple of the All-Father
For the next ten days, Harshnag led the Heroes to the east and higher into the mountains. Although at times he seemed uncertain of the temple’s location, Harshnag eventually found the right mountain pass leading to the temple’s entrance.
A naturally formed stone causeway leads to the entrance of the Eye of the All-Father, with sheer cliffs plunging hundreds of feet on both sides. The narrow path is covered with a foot of snow. Although a howling wind blows, Galadhon discerned fresh humanoid tracks heading toward the entrance.
The causeway ends before a stone dome carved from the mountainside. Six 30-foot-tall stone pillars support the dome. Carved into each pillar is a wraparound bas-relief. From north to south, the pillars depict the following scenes:
- A hill giant lifting a rock above its head
- A frost giant chopping down a great pine
- A cloud giant flying among birds in the sky
- A flying storm giant hurling lightning bolts at a ship
- A stone giant climbing a mountain
- A fire giant with chained dwarf prisoners in a cavern
At the back of the dome, a 40-foot-wide, 40-foot-high hallway heads into the mountain. The swirling wind has blown the snow far into the hallway, and more footprints lead down the stone hall.
